I recently ran across a funny bit of advice my
husband gave me a couple years (!) ago, and I thought I’d share. I was working
on a piece of what I would call literary fiction, and I was complaining that
sometimes “literary fiction” just seems to mean writing that is confusing and
constantly makes you think, “What on earth is going on here?” (No, I don’t
really feel this way about literary fiction. . . . At least, not always.)
His advice: “So just write a good story . . . and then delete
every other chapter.”
And that’s your food for thought for the weekend.
